Abstract The pedestal turbulence intensity required to convert the thin, laminar H-mode scrape-off layer (SOL) a broad turbulent SOL is calculated using theory of spreading. A lower bound on level exceed neoclassical heuristic drift (HD) width derived. reduced model spreading used determine as function flux from SOL. cross-over value for exceeding HD then calculated.
